Joe Comartin

Joe Comartin (born 1947) is a Canadian labour lawyer and politician. Comartin joined the New Democratic Party in 1969. A labour lawyer for the Canadian Auto Workers in Windsor, Ontario, Comartin enjoyed heavy support from union members when he ran for a seat in the House of Commons narrowly losing in the 1997 general election and in a 1999 by-election before winning the seat in the 2000 election becoming the first NDP MP elected from Ontario in seven years. Comartin stood as a candidate in the NDP leadership convention in 2003 finishing fourth. He is currently the party's critic for Justice, Solicitor General, Public Security and the Great Lakes Ecosystem. Comartin has been an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq.
