Jill ScottJill Scott (born April 4, 1972) is a jazz and rhythm and blues singer. She was born and raised in North Philadelphia and began her performing career reading her own poetry. She was discovered by Amir of The Roots. Amir invited her to join the band in the studios. The collaboration resulted in the song "You Got Me". Subsequently, she collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common and broadened her performing experience by touring Canada in a production of the Broadway musical Rent. Signed to Steve McKeever's newly formed Hidden Beach Recordings label, she released her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 in July 2000. The following summer she released Experience:Jil Scott 826+ after she released the single "A Long Walk." Scott continued to gain more recognition, eventually earning a Grammy nomination in early 2003 for Best Female Vocal Performance for "A Long Walk". Scott released a new album, entitled in 2004. She is considered a part of the neosoul movement. Blues Babe Foundation Jill Scott took an extended break from recording music during which she got married and established the Blues Babe Foundation, a program founded to help young minority students pay for university. The Blues Babe Foundation intends to financial support to students between the ages of sixteen to twenty-one. It plans of specifically targeting students residing in Philadelphia, Camden, and the greater Delaware Valley. Scott donated USD$100,000 to help start the foundation. The foundation was named after Scott's grandmother because of the bluish tint in her brown complexion. Scott, from very poor North Philadelphia, attended Temple University while working two jobs. She had to drop out after her junior year when she ran out of money. Scott said that she wanted to finish school, and the foundation will give money to students who are well working and who are facing the impossible and wanting achieve a dream. In the spring of 2003, the Blues Babe Foundation made a donation of over $60,000 to the graduating class of the Creative Arts School in Camden, New Jersey.
