Jeromy Carriere

Jeromy Carriere is a Senior Architect Advisor with Microsoft. In 1998 Jeromy co-founded Pittsburgh-based voice-portal infrastructure company Quackware along with Steven Woods and Alex Quilici. Jeromy architected most of the core infrastructure and coordinated technical partnerships with companies such as Speechworks (now Scansoft). In 1999 rapidly growing Quackware became Quack.com and moved to Silicon Valley. Jeromy led the continuing development of the innovative voice-based infrastructure company and helped lead a revolution changing the way in which voice-based systems are built - co-authoring several patents along the way. Quack.com delivered a voice-based portal application for Lycos - then a major web portal company - and was well into discussions with another such company Excite when Excite failed. Quack's infrastructure and technical team led by Jeromy begain to attract significant corporate attention from companies as diverse as Nortel and America Online, and in September 2000 precisely 12 months from the days of Quack's move and first funding, Quack was acquired for $200 million by America Online and moved onto the Netscape campus with what was left of the Netscape team. Jeromy continued to provide technical leadership to the growing voice team at AOL and along with Quack CTO Steven Woods integrated the Quack technology into AOL and delivered several voice-based products for AOL including AOL by Phone and AOL Voicemail. Jeromy moved to AOL headquarters in Dulles, VA in early 2002 and when AOL (now AOL Time Warner) continued to lose technical direction and leadership, Jeromy left AOL to co-found Kinitos in May with several former Quack technologists. The Quack story persists through a variety of business case studies written at Harvard Business School and the Univesity of Western Ontario. These case studies discuss the emergence of Quack, a relatively weakly funded, but technically strong startup in light of its heavily funded competition including TellMe, BeVocal and HeyAnita!. Before 1998 Jeromy was Technical Staff Member at Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute leading the technical efforts there in practical software architectural reconstruction and analysis. Jeromy is a graduate of the prestigious University of Waterloo in Canada.
