Jefferson County, Ohio

Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 73,894. Its county seat is Steubenville6 and is named for Vice President Thomas Jefferson, who was subsequently elected President.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,064 km² (411 mi²). 1,061 km² (410 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 73,894 people, 30,417 households, and 20,592 families residing in the county. The population density is 70/km² (180/mi²). There are 33,291 housing units at an average density of 31/km² (81/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.49% White, 5.68% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 30,417 households out of which 26.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.88. In the county, the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,853, and the median income for a family is $38,807. Males have a median income of $35,785 versus $20,375 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,476. 15.10% of the population and 11.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.30% of those under the age of 18 and 8.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
