Jason RobertsJason Roberts (born January 25, 1978 in Park Royal, Grenada) is a Grenadan football player, who currently plays for Wigan Athletic F.C. of the English First Division. Roberts, like his uncle Cyrille Regis, began his career in England playing for Hayes F.C.. He would soon move to Torquay United F.C. on loan, where he would score 6 goals in 13 games. Another loan would take him to Bristol City, where he scored 1 goal in 3 appearances. Roberts would finally settle in with Bristol Rovers, where he would play from 1998-2000. In the 1998-9 season Roberts scored 16 goals in 32 league appearances, and continued his profligacy in the next season, scoring 22 goals in 41 appearances. He would move to West Bromwich Albion F.C. for the 2000-1 season; Roberts' initial season went very well, as he scored 15 goals in 34 appearances, but he would struggle over the next two years. In 2001-2, Roberts made only 12 league appearances for the club, scoring 7 goals, and while he recovered his position the next season, playing in 31 games, he only registered 3 goals. Roberts was loaned out for much of the 2003-4 season to Portsmouth F.C., where he scored 1 goals in 4 appearances, but a transfer request at midseason would land him at Wigan Athletic for an approximately 2 million pound transfer fee. Roberts started out very well at Wigan, scoring 8 goals in 14 appearances to round out the 2003-4 season. Roberts has continued his dominance in the 2004-5 campaign, with 10 goals for Wigan through only 16 games. Although Roberts has the potential to be one of the most important players for the Grenada national team, availability issues that come with playing in England have limited his impact with the club. Nevertheless, he was an important force for the club during 2004 World Cup Qualifiers, in which the Grenada team put up an impressive showing before bowing out to the United States.
