Japanese Mahjong Scoring RuleJapanese Mahjong Scoring Rule is a set of rules used for Scoring in Mahjong, the gambling game of for four players, common in Japan. It was organized in Taisho period to Showa period as Mahjong became a popular game. The scoring system uses both criteria and meld as well as the way the winning hand was made. A complex but systematic point system is used but there is several scoring rules that may also be used. Players start with 20,000 to 30,000 points and this is counted by 10,000 point, 5,000 point, 1,000 point, 100 point bars are used. When a complete round of games is played or a player loses all his points, a game ends. Steps The score is counted by following order. - Counting Fu (符)
- Multiplying Fu by Han (翻)
- Adjusting the point when the winner is the dealer
- Distributing the payment to all other players if won by drawing the tile
- Adjusting the score by the number of rounds played
- (Adjusting the score by Wareme rule)
Counting Fu Counting Fu is the first step to counting the score. Fu is counted by adding all points of the winning hand and then rounding up the number to tens. It may also be rounded by 4 or 6 rule in which case the fu will be 20, 25, 30, 35 and so on. Winning by 七対子 chi to itsu (Chinese 七對子 qi dui zi) is a 25 fu or in Kansai a 50 fu. When it is counted as a 25 fu, it is also counted as 2 Han. When it is counted as a 50 fu, it is also counted as 1 Han. - A winning hand is automatically awarded 20 fu. This is called Futei (副底).
- If one wins by not picking a discarded tile until a hand is complete, 10 fu is awarded. This is called Kafu (加符).
- Add fu according to melds in the winning hand.
- Add fu according to how the waiting hand was.
- Add 2 fu if one wins by drawing the tile yourself unless Pinfu (平和) is treated as a possible wining hand and the resulting hand is a Pinfu. In this case, count the hand as 20 fu.
