Jan LysJan (Liss) Lys (c. 1590-1629) was a German painter. He was born in Oldenburg, Holstein. His first known whereabouts was in Rome in 1620, where he was greatly influenced by the work of Caravaggio. Although his earlier work was concerned with the contrasts of light and shade, his later move to Venice in 1621 meant that that gave way to brilliant colour and a free treatment of the painted surface. His work, and that of Domenico Fetti and Bernardo Strozzi, were to bring about the richer paintings of the 18th century. He died of the plague in Venice. Examples of work - Lute Player
