james walker tufts

James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) owner of the American Soda Foundation purchased 5000 acres (20 km²) of land for $5000 in North Carolina for a new town. Known as Tuftstown during development, it became Pinehurst. Tufts hired Frederick Law Olmsted to do the initial city planning. Pinehurst later became known for its golf course with the arrival of golf pro Donald Ross from Scotland in December, 1900. Pinehurst was controlled by the Tufts family until 1970. James Tufts's son Leonard, and his grandson, Richard, succeeded him.
