, Hoffa holds a degree in

Michigan State University

University of Michigan

). Hoffa was an attorney for the teamsters from
1968
to
1993
. A member of the teamsters since his 18th birthday (

), he ran for president in
1996
, losing to
Ron Carey
. He became president of the teamsters on
March 19
,
1999
, after Carey was barred from running for diverting funds for his 1996 campaign.
