James Owens

James Owens was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was approx. 25 years old, and a Corporal in the 49th Regiment (later The Royal Berkshire Regiment - Princess Charlotte of Wales's), British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 30 October 1854 at Sebastopol, in the Crimea, Corporal Owens greatly distinguished himself in a personal encounter with the Russians, and gave assistance to a lieutenant of his regiment.

His Victoria Cross is displayed at the The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment (Salisbury) Museum (Salisbury, Wiltshire, England).
