Baptist
minister and educator from
Providence, Rhode Island
. He was one of the founders of the
College of Rhode Island
(now
Brown University
) and served as its first presifent from
1765
to
1791
. He was also a delegate for
Rhode Island
to the
Continental Congress
in
1786
.
