James Charles Wilson

James Charles Wilson was born in Yorkshire, England on August 24, 1816. After attending Oxford University he emigrated to Texas in 1837. In 1842 he joined the company of Charles K. Reese for the Somervell Expedition. Captured whilst serving with the company he managed to escape his captors on July 30, 1843. He lived in Brazoria, Texas where he became district clerk before representing Calhoun, Jackson, Matagorda, and Wharton counties in the House of the Third Legislature. He also served in the Fourth Legislature from 1851 to 1853. In 1856 he became commissioner of the court of claims. As well as his legal career, Wilson served as a Methodist minister. He died on February 7, 1861. Wilson County, Texas, which was formed in 1860 is named after him. Wilson, James Charles Wilson, James Charles
