Jakob Sande

Jakob Sande was born on the first of December 1906, in the town of Dale in Sunnfjord in the county of Sogn og Fjordane. His parents were Anders (father) and Ragna Margrete (mother), who both lived at Klokkargarden. His first poems were published in 1929, by Gyldendal Norsk Forlag. The name of the book was "Svarte nter" which means "Black Nights". The book was not welcomed by conservative christians, because of Sande's language which was rather straight forward and foul for that time, but other readers loved his sense of humor, irony, and his wonderful descriptions of nature. His second book of poems was published two years later in 1931, called "Storm fr vest". Christian conservatives reacted the same way as with his previous collection, even though one of his poems in this book, "Salme", was later used in a collection of religious poems. He became a sailor in 1932 and in 1933 "Fr Sundfjord til Rio" (From Sunnfjord to Rio) was published. The book consisted of three parts, the biggest one was about the sea, the differences between the officers and the crew, bordells, ports and fighting in pubs. In 1939 "Krossen og sleggja" (the cross and the sledge hammer) was published. It was a collection of all his previous poems, as well as ten new ones. He became a teacher in 1935, but never enjoyed being one. He married Solveig Ytterli in 1943. In 1945 "Guten og Grenda" (the boy and the village) was published, this includes one of his most famous poems "Da Daniel drog" also known as "Vesle Daniel". (When Daniel left / Little Daniel) "Korn og klunger" was published in 1950, and "Sirius" in 1955. His last book, "Det kveldar p Kobbeskjer" as published in 1961, but never received any good critics, some say because he started drinking heavily around 1960. He died on the 16th of March 1967, sixty years of age.
Thirty five years after his death a statue tributed to the poem "Vesle Daniel" was raised in Dale i Sunnfjord, the community centre of Fjaler. Picture of Vesle Daniel statue, made by Sivert Donali.
