Jackie Healy-raeJackie Healy-Rae (b.March, 1931), is an Independent Irish politician. He is currently a TD for Kerry South. Jackie Healy-Rae was born in Kilgarvan, County Kerry and was educated locally. He first became involved in politics in 1974 when he was elected to Kerry County Council as a Fianna Fil candidate, a position he retained until 1997. Healy-Rae left the Fianna Fil Party just before the 1997 General Election when he failed to secure the party nomination to stand in the election. However, he was elected to Dil ireann nonetheless as an Independent TD. When the full results of the election were known it transpired that even with the combined seats of Fianna Fil and the Progressive Democrats the prospective government was still short of an overall majority. Healy-Rae was one of three Independent TDs who supported the government throughout its five year term. In 2002 a general election was called and Healy-Rae fought the election once again. His seat looked in doubt at some stages of the campaign but he was re-elected as a TD for South Kerry. Jackie Healy-Rae is one of the most colourful TDs in the country. His trademark green flat cap is ever present and his strong Kerry accent make him one of the most easily recognisable politicians in Ireland. Healy-Rae, Jackie
