Islamic Republic News Agency

The Islamic Republic News Agency, or IRNA, is the official news agency of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is government-funded and managed under the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. The agency also publishes the newspaper Iran. As of 2004, the Managing Director of IRNA is Abdollah Nasseri.

History

The Agency was founded in 1934 by Foreign Ministry of Iran as Pars Agency. In 1963 the agency was named Pars News Agency or PANA and brought under supervision of newly-founded Ministry of Information and began operating round-the-clock. In December 1987, Parliament (Majlis) renamed the agency to Islamic Republic News Agency'.
