Geography

Irene is located at 43°5'1" North, 97°9'24" West (43.083655, -97.156594). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²). None of the area is covered with water. Irene has been assigned the ZIP code 57037 and the FIPS place code 31940.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 432 people, 169 households, and 110 families residing in the city. The population density is 695.0/km² (1,790.0/mi²). There are 189 housing units at an average density of 304.1/km² (783.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.77% White, 0.00% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 169 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.76. In the city the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 20.1% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 31.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
