iraf

IRAF stands for the Image Reduction and Analysis Facility. It is a huge collection of software written by programmers at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). It is geared towards the reduction of astronomical data in CCD image form. IRAF is known both for its versatility and its extremely steep learning curve. It is simultaneously venerated and feared by first-year graduate students, often requiring a nocturnal sacrifice of cold pizza and mountain dew before functioning.
