Ionel TeodoreanuIonel Teodoreanu (6 January 1897 - 3 February 1951) was a Romanian writer. He was born in Iaşi in a family of intellectuals and, like his father and older brother (Pastorel Teodoreanu, also a well-known writer), he studied law and became a lawyer. He made his literary debut in 1919 in the journal nsemnări literare, edited by George Toprceanu and Mihail Sadoveanu. Later on, Teodoreanu came under the guidance of Garabet Ibrăileanu who considered him to be one of the most promising writers of the post-war generation. In Iaşi, under Ibrăileanu's leadership, he actively took part in the most vibrant cultural movement of inter-war Romania. It was in this environment that Ionel Teodoreanu published his classic work La Medeleni. The world presented in La Medeleni is a reflection of upper middle class life in Romania during the early decades of the 20th century. It depicts the innocence of childhood soon to be shattered by the ravages of the war and its aftermath. Although it is not an autobiography, the author's experience of having grown up in such a family in Moldavia during this time certainly served as the basis for the book. Teodoreanu abandoned the childhood theme in most of his later literary works and never again reached the same level. He died in Bucharest at the age of 54 on 3 February 1951. References - Kurt W.
