Indian Institute Of Technology, Roorkee

The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR) is the oldest engineering college in India. It is located in Roorkee in the Indian state of Uttaranchal. Established in 1847 as Thomason College of Engineering the institute has remained among the most highly regarded technical colleges in the country. The name was later changed from Thomason College to University of Roorkee with an accompanying upgradation to the status of a university. On September 21, 2001, the Government of India promulgated an Ordinance to convert the university into an Indian Institute of Technology. The ordinance was later converted into an Act of Parliament. The Institute is home to 18 departments offering both graduate and undergraduate courses in various disciplines of science and technology. In addition to the main campus at Roorkee, the college has campus located at Saharanpur. The Roorkee campus is located on Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and is about 180 kilometers from Delhi. Admission to the undergraduates takes place through JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). There are other tests for different postgraduate courses, information about which can be found on the institute's website. Apart from undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in engineering, the institute also offers degrees in management, sciences and Ph.Ds. The institute is renowned for its faculty and residential facilities, and regarded among the best technical institutes of the country.
