Incan ArmyInca armies ranged in size anywhere from 20,000 men to 250,000 men. At the heart of the army were simple warriors armed with spears, wooden maces, and slings. Their armor consisted of wooden or leather shields, padded jackets and a helmet. All males were required to have military training unless physically inept. Nobles who were part of the army often had bronze halberd-like axes as well, though this weapon was not commonly seen. The commanders were known as Sapa Inca, and along with other nobles were carried into battle on litters protected by Aucakpussak or veteran troops. From the litter the sling was the favored weapon and also gave commanders a good view of the battle. Holy items known as huaca were also carried into battle on litters.
