Imola
Imola
(
1991
pop. 62,567) is a town in the
Emilia-Romagna
region of north-central
Italy
, most noted as the home of the
Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari
and the
Formula One
San Marino Grand Prix
. The race, named for the nearby principality of
San Marino
which is itself too small to host a grand prix, is generally referred to by the name "Imola." The town itself, famous for its
ceramics
, dates back to
Roman
times as an agricultural and trade center; it was then known as
Forum Cornelii
. According to tradition,
Saint Cassian of Imola
was martyred here during the reign of
Julian the Apostate
in the 4th century. It was later ruled by various
condottieri
, such as the
Visconti
and the
Sforza
, from which era several landmark fortresses remain.
