Ijzertoren

The IJzertoren is a tower along the Belgian Yser river. Actually, there have been two IJzertorens. The first tower was built as a memorial after the first world war by an organisation of former Flemish soldiers. On the night of 15 and 16 March 1946, it was blown up by means of dynamite. The perpetrators were never caught. A few years later, a new tower was built on the same place. The IJzertoren originally symbolized the demand for Nooit meer Oorlog (Never again War). It has also become a symbol of Flemish nationalism, especially regarding the rights to use the Dutch language.
