Iconoclastic Riots Iconoclasm The iconoclastic riots were a series of destructions to Catholic relics such as statues, altars, fonts etc. During the riots hundreds of catholic churches, chapels, abbeys and monasterys were destroyed together with everything in it (statues, paintings, bibles and other religious books, etc). this was done by angry calvinists. (during that time a new religion came on, calvinism). Source one (http://www.prca.org/books/portraits/datheen.htm) - "Reformed people took their frustration out on every evidence of Roman Catholicism which they could find: churches, stained-glass windows, images, altars, decorations. Smashing, wrecking, destroying, they laid the interiors of many churches in ruins. "
source two (Encarta - Encyclopedie) - "Beeldenstorm, de vernieling van beelden en andere religieuze objecten tijdens de opkomst van het protestantisme"
why did the Iconoclastic riots happen? There were several reasons why this happened, the most important was a religious one. During that time calvinism came on in the Spanish Netherlands. The calvinists were against venerating the saints, as was usual in the catholic church. And Catholicism was until then the only religion which was allowed, so the calvinists were persecuted what made them even more angry than they already were. Another thing they got annoyed about was the wealth of the catholic church, the calvinists thought that a church has to be very sober. There were also social reasons for the riots. Because the calvinists were persecuted in a lot of countries, the Dutch people were scared that would also happen in The Netherlands. Another thing was that the nobles and the farmers thought that they had to pay too much taxation while others had no (almost no) taxes to pay. And a thing that made it even worse was that in 1566 there was a famine in The Netherlands. Hagenpreken A Hagenpreek or field sermon, is an outdoor church service . These Church services were held in 1566 and the years following by Calvinists. They did this because public religion demonstration was forbidden, except for the Roman Catholic. Where and when were the Riots? Before the Iconoclastic Riots came to the Netherlands, there already were riots in other parts of Phillips empire. The first one was in 1522 in Wittenberg, after that there were riots in Zrich (in 1523), Copenhagen (1530), Mnster (1534), Geneva (1535), Augsburg (1537), and in Scotland (1559). On the 10th August 1566 the Riots started in The Netherlands. This was in Steenvoorde. After one of the many field sermons of Sebastiaan Matte the people went to the s.t. Laurentius Monastery to destroy all the statues there. They were leaded by Jacob de Buysere. After that there were much more of these Iconoclastic Riots. On the 13th of August Jacob de Buysere preached in Belle, after his preach they went to the Monastery of st. Antonius, where they destroyed and steal everything. On the 15th of August through the whole "westerkwartier" there were of these Riots, mostly started by wandering troops.
