Ian Gibson (Politician)
Ian Gibson
(born
26 September
1938
) is a politician in the
United Kingdom
. He is
Labour
member of Parliament
for
Norwich
North, and was first elected in
1997
. He had previously been dean of
biology
at the
University of East Anglia
where he was the head of a research team investigating cancer. Dr Gibson is chairman of the
Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology
and was made an honorary professor at UEA and awarded a 'Champion' award by
Macmillan Cancer Relief
for his work in support of people with cancer. He was a major campaigner against top-up fees for universities. He suffered a minor stroke on a visit to the
Palestinian Territories
in September
2004
