Hverageri

Hverageri is a small town in the south of Iceland at about 40 km to the east of Reykjavk on the river Varm. It has around 1,700 residents. The town is known for its greenhouses which are heated by hot water from volcanic hot springs in the area and in the town itself. Even exotic fruits are grown in these greenhouses. The area is part of the Hengill central volcano. Even in the gardens, you can detect white or red earth which is fuming. To the south of Hverageri, there is the small port of orlkshfn. From here a ferry to the island of Heimaey can be taken. See also: Volcanoes of Iceland
