Hurricane Ione

Hurricane Ione was the third in a series of hurricanes to strike North Carolina during the 1955 Atlantic hurricane season. Ione was a Category 1 Hurricane with 75 mph winds when it made landfall in Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Ione then turned northeast, weakened to a tropical storm and passed over Cape Hatteras and headed out to sea. Ione caused some minor flooding in North Carolina, in an area already devastated by Hurricanes Connie and Diane six weeks earlier. (Sept 10-24) Ione also came less than a year after Hurricane Hazel hit North Carolina as a Category 4 hurricane.
