Hungarian First ArmyThe Hungarian First Army was a Hungarian field army of World War II. Hungary was an Axis state at the beginning of the European conflict, under Admiral Mikls Horthy. In the small Hungarian Army, three field armies were formed on March 1, 1940. All were to see action on the Eastern Front against the Red Army. Probably the best-known of the three is the Hungarian Second Army, which was handed the task of protecting the German Sixth Army's rear during the Battle of Stalingrad, together with the Italian Eighth Army. Their mission ultimately failed. The First Army was formed on March 1, 1940, under the command of Lieutenant-General (Altabornagy according to the Hungarian army rank) Vilmos Nagy. Under Nagy the First Army did not see combat, as Hungarian entry into World War II had not come yet. The only important military events during the time was the Hungarian annexation of Transylvania. After Nagy was succeeded by Lieutenant-General Istvn Schweitzer, the First Army began seeing action on the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa. Hungarian troops were part of the 1 million+ non-German Axis troops on the Eastern Front, which were composed mainly of Romanian troops. As Soviet troops entered Hungary and most other Axis states in 1944, the First Army continued its precarious existence even after all of Hungary was in Soviet control. It was not until May 8, 1945, the day the war in Europe ended, that the First Army was disbanded. Its last commander was Lieutenant-General Dezso Laszlo.
