Humberto Sousa Cardinal Medeiros

Humberto Sousa Cardinal Medeiros (October 1, 1915 - September 17, 1983) was a Cardinal. Born in the village of Arrifes on the island of Sao Miguel, Portugal. As a child he immigrated, with his family, to Fall River, Massachusetts. He was ordained a priest of the Fall River diocese on June 15, 1946. He was assigned to several parishes and also held the position of Vicar General of the diocese. On April 14, 1966 he was appointed Bishop of Brownsville, Texas by Pope Paul VI. His Episcopal ordination took place on June 9, 1966. He became well known for his tireless work on behalf of the migrant workers in the area. On September 8, 1970, he was appointed Archbishop of Boston. Less than three years later, on March 5, 1973, he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal.
