Human Life International

Human Life International is a Catholic activist group organized to advocate laws prohibiting abortion. Founded in 1981 by Father Paul Marx the group is noted for its close affiliations with those who advocate violence against clinics and practitioners who perform legal abortions. Ohio HLI leader Steven Prunder wrote in a 1993 article for Life Advocate that violence was the best tactic for those advocating more restrictive abortion laws. Human Life International fundraising literature and public meetings have featured appearances by Joan Andrews-Bell, who was arrested in Florida along with KKK members on allegations they invaded and damaged a clinic, and by Siegfried Ernst, whose rhetoric German courts have equated with that of the Third Reich. HLI awarded Ernst its highest international award in 1991. Andrews-Bell was later a mentor of Michael Griffin who was convicted for the politically motivated murder of Dr. David Gunn.
