Howard Callaway
Howard Hollis "Bo" Callaway
(born
April 2
,
1927
) is a
politician
from the
state
of
Georgia
. Callaway was born in
LaGrange, Georgia
. He attended
Georgia Tech
and graduated from the
United States Military Academy
. After his term in the Army ended, Callaway returned to Georgia to help his father run their business. Callaway supported the
Democratic party
until
1964
when he switched to support the
Republican party
. Callaway ran for a seat in the
House of Representatives
in that year and he became the first Republican elected to the U.S. House from Georgia since
Reconstruction
. Callaway ran for governor of Georgia in
1966
and he won a plurality over
Lester Maddox
in the election, but a write-in effort in support of
Ellis Arnall
denied Callaway a majority of votes. Dominated overwhelmingly by Democrats, the Georgia legislature then selected Maddox as governor. Callaway moved to
Colorado
in the
1970s
. He served as
Secretary of the Army
from
1973
to
1975
and as
Gerald Ford
's campaign manager. Callaway was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for the
U.S. Senate
in
1980
. Callaway then served as the chairman of the Colorado Republican party and as head of
GOPAC
