Houari Boumdienne (original name Mohamed Ben Brahim Boukharouba) (August 23 1932 - December 27 1978) was President of Algeria from 19 June 1965 to 27 December 1978 (Chairman of the Revolutionary Council until 12 December 1976). His native language was the Amazigh langauge Chaoui. He joined a guerrilla unit in 1955 and was chief of staff of the National Liberation Front from 1960. He became defence minister in 1962 and overthrew previous president Ahmed Ben Bella in a military coup in June 1965. He was president until his death.
