Hot Dish

Note: "Hot dish" can also refer to any item of cuisine that has been heated. Hot dish (also hotdish) is a casserole-like food native to the Midwest, associated particularly with Minnesota. It normally consists of a starch, a meat, and a vegetable mixed together along with some type of sauce, often seasoned with pepper or tabasco sauce. (A typical hot dish might consist of potatoes, ground beef, and corn, with canned soup added for flavor and as a sauce.) Hot dish can be eaten either on a plate or in a bowl. A common hotdish recipe in Minnesota is Green Bean Mushroom.

Green Bean Mushroom Hotdish

Ingredients
2 lb - ground chuck
1/2 - sweet yellow onion, finely chopped
3-6 - garlic cloves, minced
4 oz - mushrooms, sliced
1 Tbsp - olive oil
to taste - salt and pepper
1 can - green beans
1 can - cream of mushroom soup
1 Cup - half-and-half cream
1 lb - frozen tater-tots
Steps
  1. Heat an oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the onions and garlic in the olive oil; cook until the onions are translucent. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Add the mushrooms to the onions and reduce the heat to medium. Stirring occasionally, cook the mushrooms until their edges brown and they start releasing liquid (3-4 minutes). Re-season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Add the ground chuck and stir it into the vegetables, breaking it up with a wooden spoon or spatula until it is browned. Re-season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
  5. In an oven baking dish, mix the ground chuck mixture with the green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and cream. Spread it out evenly and then layer the top with the frozen tater-tots.
  6. Place the baking dish in the heated oven for 20-30 minutes, or until the tater-tots have browned.
  7. Remove from the oven and serve.
::Serves 4-6 as a medium entree
