Hot Buttered Rum

Hot buttered rum is a cocktail or toddy which can be made in the following way.
  1. Pour 1 1/2 ounces of a good rum into a cup.
  2. Stir in a teaspoon of sugar.
  3. Top up with freshly boiled water.
  4. Add a knob of butter and sprinkle with nutmeg.
The Joy of Cooking describes this drink as one that "makes you see double and feel single". Replacing the boiling water with hot cider makes a "Stonewall". See also: List of cocktails
