. He was the great-great-grandson of Admiral
Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood
. Hood joined the
Royal Navy
in
1883
serving on
Temeraire
, and
Hyacinth
. In
1889
, as a
midshipman
, he served on
Calliope
during the
Samoan Hurricane
. In World War I, Hood took part in the defence of
Flanders
and the
Battle of the Yser
. He commanded the Third Battlecruiser Squadron of Sir
John Jellicoe
's
Grand Fleet
. He died along with all but six of the crew of his
flagship
Invincible
when she exploded at the
Battle of Jutland
