Home-built Automobile Engines

The debate over the best way to make a home-built automobile engine falls into two categories.
  1. High rpm power.
  2. Low rpm torque.
The engine should be built for the specific application needed. Factors worth considering before building are if the engine is going to be used daily or for racing and durability. Investing in high quality machine work at a competent shop could save lots of money and frustration. When building an engine one can maneuver where the power peak occurs, as well as how wide the torque band is, and its peak occurrence. To achieve this, many variables will have to be tuned, such as camshafts, runner volumes, engine compression ratio, exhaust, manifold lengths, fuel, ignition, and carburetion. Many engine builders believe that no matter how built, the better an engine breathes the better it performs. Where the peak power and torque occur is again dependent on the application. For drag racing applications, make as much power as possible and then gear accordingly. For street racers low rpm torque is better.
