Holy Fire
The
Holy Fire
is believed by
Orthodox Christians
to be miracle that occurs every year at the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre
in
Jerusalem
every
Easter
sunday. It begins at noon when the Orthodox
Patriarch
or another Orthodox
Archbishop
recites a specific
prayer
. The congregants will then chant "Lord, have mercy" (
Kyrie eleison
in
Greek
) until the Holy Fire lights on a lamp of olive oil. The Patriarch/Archbishop will then recite some prayers and light 33 candles and distribute them to the congregants. The fire also spreads to other unlit lamps around the church.
