Holtzman Effect

The Holtzman effect is a fictional scientific phenomen in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. The Holtzman effect is named after the scientist who discovered it, Tio Holtzman. The effect is never explained in detail, but it folds space, thus allowing the Spacing Guild's ships to travel between planets. The Holtzman effect can also be employed for defensive shields, which allow objects moving slowly to pass through, but repels those moving fast. If a Holtzman shield is crossed with a lasgun beam, it results in sub-atomic fusion. The Holtzman effect can be used to create hovering devices, suspensors, which annul gravitation. A variation is glowglobes, which use the extra energy to act as devices of illumination, much like a lightbulb.
