holton, michigan

Holton is a unincorporated community in Muskegon County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a small town of about 500 people and local government is adminstered by Holton Township. Holton is on Michigan State Highway 120 about 15 miles northeast of Muskegon, and about 15 miles east of Lake Michigan. The town was founded by Scandinavians in the mid-1800s. The first church was Holton Evangelical Lutheran Church. In the 1900s, other nationalities started moving in, and Holton soon became home to many Amish, who still remain today. In 2000, this small town was one of the 7 districts in the state of Michigan that would have been eligible for private school vouchers, on which there was a state-wide referendum that year. Most locals were opposed to the measure, since they didn't want competition for the local public school. The measure was defeated in Holton and all across the state by about a 2:1 ratio. The main festival of the year, Holton Days, is held in the last weekend of July.
