Hollow Structural SteelHollow structural steel (HSS) is rapidly becoming a popular building material, because of its combination of strength, ease of construction, and architectural beauty. Round HSS is essentially structural pipe. Examples of structural pipe include so-called rigging, the most popular sizes of which are "size 6" (1 inch inside diamter, 1.315 inch outside diamter) and "size 8" (1.5inch inside diamter and 1.9inch outside diamter). Size 9 (2 inch inside diamter) is commonly used for windmills. Square HSS Square HSS is made from round HSS, where, during the manufacturing process, round HSS is pressed into a square shape while still hot. Filled HSS HSS is often filled with cement to improve fire rating, as well as durability. For example, barriers around parking areas made of HSS are often filled, to at least bumper heigh, with portland cement. (Actually with concrete, which is a mixture of cement, and aggregate). Recent successful examples of the architectural aesthetics of HSS HSS can be made into beautiful sculptural elements. Examples include the three new light stands that help to enhance the architectural beauty of Dundas Square in Toronto. The light stands are made of curved HSS of square cross section, and are finished in a high gloss white epoxy paint that nicely compliments the textured nonslip black granite surface from which Dundas Square is made.
