Hoke County, North Carolina Hoke County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 33,646. Its county seat is Raeford6. History The county was formed in 1911 from parts of Cumberland County and Robeson County. It was named for Robert F. Hoke, a Confederate general in the American Civil War. Law and government Hoke County is a member of the regional Lumber River Council of Governments. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,016 km² (392 mi²). 1,013 km² (391 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water. Townships The county is divided into eight townships: Allendale, Antioch, Blue Springs, Fort Bragg Military Reservation, McLauchlin, Raeford, Quewhiffle, and Stonewall. Adjacent Counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,646 people, 11,373 households, and 8,745 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (86/mi²). There are 12,518 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 44.53% White, 37.64% Black or African American, 11.45% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 3.27% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 7.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 11,373 households out of which 41.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.70% are married couples living together, 18.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.10% are non-families. 19.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.22. In the county the population is spread out with 29.80% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 34.10% from 25 to 44, 17.60% from 45 to 64, and 7.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $33,230, and the median income for a family is $36,110. Males have a median income of $27,925 versus $21,184 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,635. 17.70% of the population and 14.40% of families are below the poverty line.
