Hockley County, Texas

Hockley County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 22,716. Its county seat is Levelland6, and the county is named for George Washington Hockley, a Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,353 km² (909 mi²). 2,352 km² (908 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,716 people, 7,994 households, and 6,091 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 9,148 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.38% White, 3.72% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 18.68% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 37.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,994 households out of which 38.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.80% are non-families. 21.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.22. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 11.80% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,085, and the median income for a family is $35,288. Males have a median income of $29,735 versus $20,671 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,022. 18.90% of the population and 14.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.10% of those under the age of 18 and 12.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
