Hochschule Fr Musik Hanns Eisler

The Hochschule fr Musik "Hanns Eisler" (College of Music "Hanns Eisler") is one of the leading music conservatories in Germany. It was established in East Berlin in 1950 as the Deutsche Hochschule fr Musik (German College of Music) because the older Hochschule fr Musik Berlin (now the University of the Arts) was in West Berlin. After the death of one of its first professors, composer Hanns Eisler, the school was renamed in his honor in 1964. Located in Berlin's famed Gendarmenmarkt, the college has an international faculty and programs in performance, composition, voice, conducting, jazz and popular music, arts management, musical theater, stage direction and music theory. Also notable are its institutes for new music and musicians' health. During the time of the Weimar Republic the Hochschule was the hub of the international music scene, drawing musical luminaries and students from around the world.
