HMS ''Defence
was a
3rd rate
ship of the line
of 74 guns, built in 1763 for the
Royal Navy
. She fought at the battles of
Cape St. Vincent
in 1780,
Cuddalore
in 1783, the
Glorious First of June
,
the Nile
,
Copenhagen
and
Trafalgar
, where she captured the Spanish ship
San Ildefonso''. She ran aground on
24 December
1811
and all but five of crew perished.
