HMS ''Courageous'' was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy. It was converted from an unsuccessful design officially described as a "large light cruiser". It was the first major warship of the RN to be lost during World War II, being sunk by a U Boat on 17 September 1939 in the western approaches.
