Hmas Fremantle
Two vessels of the
Royal Australian Navy
have been named for the city of
Fremantle
in
Western Australia
.
The first
HMAS Fremantle
(J-246/M-246) was a
Bathurst class corvette
built by Evans Deakin and Company at
Brisbane
in
Queensland
, launched on
18 March
1942
by Mrs. J. Curtin, wife of the
Prime Minister
John Curtin
, and commissioned on
24 March
1943
. HMAS Fremantle paid off to reserve on
22 June
1959
and was sold for scrap to the Kinoshita Company of
Japan
on
6 January
1961
.
The second HMAS Fremantle (P-203) is the
lead ship
of the
Fremantle class patrol boats
laid down by Brooke Marine at
Lowestoft
in
England
on
11 November
1977
, launched on
16 February
1979
and commissioned on
15 March
1980
.
The
S class destroyer
HMS Swordsman
, transferred to the Royal Australian Navy from the
Royal Navy
, was to have been renamed HMAS Fremantle but this was rescinded on
11 June
1920
and the original name retained. Fremantle
