Hmas Fremantle

Two vessels of the Royal Australian Navy have been named for the city of Fremantle in Western Australia.
The first HMAS Fremantle (J-246/M-246) was a Bathurst class corvette built by Evans Deakin and Company at Brisbane in Queensland, launched on 18 March 1942 by Mrs. J. Curtin, wife of the Prime Minister John Curtin, and commissioned on 24 March 1943. HMAS Fremantle paid off to reserve on 22 June 1959 and was sold for scrap to the Kinoshita Company of Japan on 6 January 1961.
The second HMAS Fremantle (P-203) is the lead ship of the Fremantle class patrol boats laid down by Brooke Marine at Lowestoft in England on 11 November 1977, launched on 16 February 1979 and commissioned on 15 March 1980.
The S class destroyer HMS Swordsman, transferred to the Royal Australian Navy from the Royal Navy, was to have been renamed HMAS Fremantle but this was rescinded on 11 June 1920 and the original name retained. Fremantle
