Hillside Strangler (Illinois)

The Hillside Strangler is an interchange in Hillside, Illinois, where Interstate 88, 290 and 294 merge into one lane. One of the most hated stretches of the Chicago expressway system, improvements to the interchange were completed in 2001. Although the improvement to traffic flow on the feeder ramps from I-294, I-88 and local surface streets at the interchange has been large, traffic flow towards Chicago now tends to back up before a choke point at First Avenue, some four miles east of the original point of congestion, largely compromising the benefits during rush hour traffic. The change in location of traffic congestion does at least afford the impatient driver an opportunity to choose alternate routes, an opportunity not available before the interchange improvements were completed.
