Highland County, Virginia Highland County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 2,536. Its county seat is Monterey6. History The county was formed in 1847 from Bath County and Pendleton County. It was named for its lofty elevation. The Battle of McDowell, part of Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign, took place here May 8, 1862. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,077 km² (416 mi²). 1,077 km² (416 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.00% water. Districts The county is divided into three supervisor districts: Blue Grass, Monterey, and Stonewall. Adjacent Counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,536 people, 1,131 households, and 764 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 1,822 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.25% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,131 households out of which 24.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 29.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.74. In the county, the population is spread out with 19.90% under the age of 18, 4.10% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 31.20% from 45 to 64, and 20.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,732, and the median income for a family is $37,530. Males have a median income of $25,904 versus $19,250 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,976. 12.60% of the population and 9.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.20% of those under the age of 18 and 15.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
