Highland County, Ohio

Highland County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 40,875. Its county seat is Hillsboro6 and is named for the topography there, which is hilly and divides the watersheds of the Little Miami and Scioto Rivers.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,445 km² (558 mi²). 1,433 km² (553 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.82% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,875 people, 15,587 households, and 11,394 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (74/mi²). There are 17,583 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.88% White, 1.50% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 15,587 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.90% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.04. In the county the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,313, and the median income for a family is $41,091. Males have a median income of $32,541 versus $22,842 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,521. 11.80% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.40% of those under the age of 18 and 11.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
