Some of the schools have also been featured in motion pictures. The Bishop's School The Bishop's School is a private, college preparatory, secondary Episcopalian day school located in La Jolla, California. Originally a boarding school for girls with a short-lived downtown San Diego day school component, upon a merger with the San Miguel School of San Diego, California in 1971, it became co-educational and, in June 1983, the boarding department was closed. It continues to distinguish itself as one of the finest college preparatory day schools in Southern California, with a large percentage of its graduates matriculating to Ivy League-calibre universities. Bishop's gained national attention in the 1990s due to its status as the high school of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who in 1997 embarked on a killing spree across America that culminated in the assassination of the popular Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. Other notable alums include Gary Aguirre (stage name, Gary Jules who graduated from Bishops in 1986 and Shane Walton an NFL defensive Back Patrick Henry High School Patrick Henry High School is a public secondary school located in San Diego, California. University of San Diego High School (USDHS) University of San Diego High School (USDHS) is a Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory secondary school located in San Diego, California. University of San Diego High School was founded as a boys school in 1957. It was merged with the Cathedral Girls' High School in 1970 to become a co-educational campus. Notable alumni include Academy Award-nominated director Cameron Crowe, PGA and champion golfer Phil Mickelson, businessmen Rug Cunningham, Pat Shea, Phil Lebherz, convicted murderer Scott Peterson, and prolific writer for Warner Brothers and Disney, Bobbi Weiss. In 1999, Bishop Robert H. Brom announced plans to move the USDHS campus to a new North County location. The new site, Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS), with state of the art facilities and considerably more acreage, is expected to open in 2005 St. Augustine High School St. Augustine High School (locally called "Saints"), is a Catholic high school for young men founded in 1922. Named after Saint Augustine of Hippo, it teaches young men the Catholic faith within the Augustinian tradition. The culturally diverse school serves the Catholic communities of San Diego County and Tijuana, Mexico. It states that "we open our doors to all boys we believe will benefit from our academic program. " In September of 1978, PSA Flight 178 crashed and exploded a block away from the school. During the 1990s and episode of the television series Silk Stalkings was filmed on the campus. Alumni include former mayor Roger Hedgecock, city councilman Ralph Inzunza, and John Castellanos who plays John Silva on the daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless. The Academy of Our Lady of Peace The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (locally called "OLP"), is a Catholic high school for young women. It teaches young women the Catholic faith within the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The Academy was founded as a girls' school in 1882. The culturally diverse school serves the Catholic communities of San Diego County, California and Tijuana, Mexico. It states that "every girl is helped to realize she is a unique human being with gifts that can be developed and shared." In 1979, the school merged with another all girls school, Rosary High School. In 2000, the school gained national attention for being the setting of the teeange-comedy film Bring it On with Kirsten Dunst. The Preuss School UCSD The Preuss School was established on the University of California, San Diego campus in Fall 1999. Preuss is chartered under San Diego Unified School District. Its mission is to provide an intensive college preparatory curriculum to low-income student populations and to improve educational practices in grades 6-12. If these goals are realized, the school will matriculate students who are competitively eligible to enter the University of California or other selective institutions of higher education. The School opened with 150 students in grades 6 8, and now is fully enrolled with 767 students in grades 6 12. Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High Charter School Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High Charter School (often referred to as High Tech High (HTH)) is a public charter high school in San Diego, California. It is the first model school in an attempt to make changes to the way most students in the United States, and countries with similar schools, are taught. The program is unique enough that it had over 600 visitors, including U.S. state Governors Gray Davis (CA), Tom Ridge (PA), and Bill Owens (CO), and Senator Joe Lieberman, in its first year alone. It regularly receives several times more applications than it can serve at a time, as the student body is limited to 400 students, avoiding the problems created by the impersonal nature of the more common 15002000 student high schools.
