high mass (dict)

High Mass

Until the changes effected by the Second Vatican Council, a High Mass (as distinct from a Low Mass) was one celebrated by a priest, assisted by a Deacon and Subdeacon, with all the solemnity of chant, incense and full ceremonial. The distinction between the two mass types no longer exists in the Roman Catholic church. The distiction is still made in Anglo-Catholic churches in the Anglican Communion and the Continuing_Anglican bodies, as well some groups of Old Catholics.
